Patreon takes 10% of what patrons pay from creators who launched their page after August 4, 2025, plus payment processing of 2.9% + $0.30 per card payment in US dollars. Creators who launched earlier keep their legacy plan: 5% (Founders), 8% (Pro) or 12% (Premium). All plans also pay processing, and payout and currency-conversion fees can apply on top.
The all-in cost for a new creator is therefore around 14% to 19% of gross, depending on how many small payments make up the total: 14.1% on $25 pledges, 18.9% on $5 pledges. On $1,000 a month from 200 patrons at $5, a creator keeps about $811.
Patreon fees by plan: how much Patreon takes on each
| Plan | Who is on it | Platform fee | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Pages published after 4 Aug 2025 | 10% | Current plan for all new creators |
| Pro (legacy) | Pages published before 4 Aug 2025 on Pro | 8% | Closed to new creators |
| Premium (legacy) | Legacy Premium pages (adds merch, team accounts) | 12% | Closed to new creators |
| Founders (legacy) | Pages from before May 2019 | 5% | Closed since 2019 |
Legacy rates survive only while the page stays published. Unpublishing a page, even briefly, moves the account to the standard 10% plan. Platform fees are calculated on the payment excluding sales tax.
Digital product sales (one-time purchases) carry the same 5–12% range depending on plan, and creators who started selling digital products before 22 May 2025 may pay 5%. Listing products is free.
Patreon fees for payment processing
Processing is charged on every payment and comes on top of the platform fee. Current standard rates:
- USD by card, Apple Pay or US PayPal/Venmo: 2.9% + $0.30 per payment over $3.
- USD via non-US PayPal/Venmo: 3.9% + $0.30 per payment over $3.
- Other currencies: 3% to 3.9% plus a small fixed fee. For example EUR is 3.4% + €0.35 over €3; AUD is 3% + A$0.30 over A$3.
- Micropayments (legacy plans only): tier prices at or below about $3 are charged around 5% plus a small fixed fee instead of the standard rate.
- Founders plan: 1.6% + $0.30 by card or Apple Pay, 2.65% + $0.28 via PayPal, USD only.
The fixed $0.30 is why cheap tiers lose a larger share. A $1 tier under the standard plan would lose 10 cents to the platform and 33 cents to processing, 43% in total, which is why Patreon’s lowest practical tier is $3 and most creators start at $5.
Worked example: $1,000 a month
200 patrons paying $5 each, all in USD by card:
| Plan | Platform fee | Processing (2.9% + 200 x $0.30) | Total fees | Creator keeps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard 10% | $100 | $89 | $189 (18.9%) | $811 |
| Pro 8% (legacy) | $80 | $89 | $169 (16.9%) | $831 |
| Premium 12% (legacy) | $120 | $89 | $209 (20.9%) | $791 |
| Founders 5% (legacy, 1.6% + $0.30) | $50 | $76 | $126 (12.6%) | $874 |
Same $1,000 from 40 patrons at $25 under the standard plan: platform $100, processing $29 + $12 = $41, creator keeps $859. Fewer, larger payments cut the processing drag by nearly $50. Payout and currency fees below come off after this.
Apple App Store fee
Apple requires new memberships and digital purchases made inside the Patreon iOS app to go through in-app purchase, which carries Apple’s 30% commission. Patreon adds no extra processing fee on iOS, but its platform fee still applies. Creators can set a higher in-app price to pass the Apple charge on to the fan rather than absorb it. Memberships bought on the web are unaffected, which is why most creators steer fans to the browser.
Currency conversion
A 2.5% fee applies when a patron pays in a currency different from the creator’s payout currency, calculated on the full amount including sales tax. It is reversed on refunds and does not apply when patron and creator share a currency.
Patreon payout
Patreon pays creators on request or on a schedule from their balance, with the fee depending on method:
| Payout method | Fee | Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| US bank transfer via Stripe (USD) | $0.25 per payout | None stated |
| PayPal | 1% of amount, min $0.25, capped at $20 | $10 |
| Payoneer wallet | $1.00 per payout | $25 |
| Non-USD bank transfer via Payoneer | Varies by currency, e.g. €0.50 for EUR | Varies |
Third-party withdrawal charges from PayPal or Payoneer are extra. Patreon may also add sales tax, VAT or GST to its own fees as a separate line item where local law requires.
Patreon against the alternatives
For a creator comparing memberships platforms: Ko-fi charges 0% on donations and 5% on memberships plus processing, or 0% on everything for a monthly subscription. OnlyFans, Fansly and Fanfix charge a flat 20% that includes processing, so at 10% + 2.9% + $0.30 Patreon is cheaper for most creators and not as cheap as its headline suggests. The full side-by-side is in the platform fee comparison.
What each platform takes from $1,000 runs the same arithmetic across every creator platform including Twitch and YouTube, OnlyFans alternatives ranked by fee sets Patreon against the SFW and adult-allowed options, and YouTube memberships shows the 70/30 alternative for video creators.
